The Pew Charitable Trusts is excited to announce the release of a new report: “Assuring Environmental Compliance in Deep-Sea Mining: Lessons from Industry and Regulators.” This report studies different compliance regimes and sets forth recommendations for the International Seabed Authority and its stakeholders. The report was developed by Dr. Kevin Murphy, an environmental consultant with decades of experience advising mining and other extractive industry stakeholders, with support from The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Dr. Murphy conducted research and interviewed regulators in national environmental organizations, natural resource protection agencies, compliance personnel corporations, and international financial institutions over a 12-month period. He also drew on input from a panel of international experts from industry, regulatory agencies, and environmental organizations. The resulting study highlights some of the potential differences between these evolved regimes and the emerging governance framework for seabed mining, while also offering real-world examples of ways in which environmental compliance in the Area can be strengthened. RESOLVE hosted a webinar on Wednesday, 22 July 2020, from 13:00 – 14:15 BST to provide an overview of the report, as well as an opportunity for questions with some of the panel participants that shaped it.
Speakers at the webinar included the author of the report, Dr. Murphy – a marine scientist by background and a former Partner at Environmental Resources Management, Renee Grogan – environmental consultant and Director at Gro Sustainability and Miguel Ruiz-Larrea – former Global Social Performance Manager at Shell. The session was moderated by Paul De Morgan of RESOLVE and Andrew Friedman from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
