Artisanal miners produce 20 percent of the world’s gold supply, and 40 million artisanal miners and their families are supported by this sector. However, the potential negative social, environmental, and health impacts of mining practices and corresponding supply chain risks often deter downstream customers committed to due diligence and risk management. What’s missing is a clear standard for “market acceptability” of artisanal minerals.
The Code of Risk-mitigation for Artisanal and small-scale mining engaging in Formal Trade (CRAFT), as an entry-point standard and tool, complements best-in-class certification systems. Together, they create a pathway for a larger share of artisanal miners to engage with formal markets, initiating due diligence and progressive improvement in environmental and social practices.
To match the standard to incentives, RESOLVE’s CRAFT Impact Marketplace will link artisanal miners to international markets, financing, and technical support and will support downstream companies and donor governments that are seeking to engage more closely with artisanal producers.
