For over 80 years, the Institute of World Affairs has been a leading voice in international relations research, instruction and applied programming.
Founded in 1924, the Institute of World Affairs (IWA) works across cultual and political boundaries to advance creative approaches to conflict analysis, conflict managment, and post-conflict peacebuilding. The Institute’s current work consists of
1. Confidential dialogues and briefings for senior policy practitioners from the U.S. and abroad
2. Education and training programs in conflict analysis, cross-cultural negotiation, and peacebuilding for varous practitioner communities
3. Research, publications and policy briefings to enhance practice in war-to-peace transitions
4. Field projects designed to increae functional contacts between communities in conflict
IWA began in 1924 in Geneva, Switzerland as the Student’s International Union with the objective of providing a forum to enhance the further understanding of international problems as well as promote a service ethic among the youth of various nationalities.
In 1941 the SIU relocated its offices to New York City with summer seminars in Salisbury, Connecticut. September of 1977 saw the SIU merge with the American Universities Field Staff (AUFS) in an effort to expand services and to stabilize agency funding.
In 1994, the organization merged with another non-profit organization, the Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA), and offered overseas fellowships to American students.
IWA continues to develop new and innovative programs to reach out to diverse social groups with programs to address current challenges in international politics.
